Sulphonic Acid

Linear Alkyl Benzene Sulphonic Acid (LABSA), Dodecyl Benzene Sulphonic Acid (DBSA), or simply Sulphonic Acid are few of the several names given to a type of organic acid that can be represented by the general formula R–SO2 –OH, where 'R' is usually a hydrocarbon side chain.

LABSA or sulphonic acid is the largest-volume synthetic surfactant manufactured because of its relatively low cost and good performance.

Sulphonic acids have the unique tendency to bind to proteins and carbohydrates tightly; most "washable" dyes are sulphonic acids (or have the functional  sulfonyl  group in them) for this reason. Sulphonic acids and their salts ( sulphonates ) are used extensively in such diverse products like detergents, sulfa drugs, anion exchange resins for water purification, dyes, emulsifiers, etc.

Sulphonic acid is soluble in water and is corrosive to metal and tissue.

Available Packaging:
ACI's sulphonic acid is available in durable 210 kg plastic drums.

Safety Measures

  • Sulphonic acid is corrosive. When heated to decomposition or on contact with strong acids, it produces highly toxic fumes of oxides of sulphur (such as SO2 and SO3 ).
  • Keep the acid container dry and away from heat and sources of ignition. Empty containers pose a fire risk; evaporate the residue under a fume hood. Ground all equipment containing the acid.
  • Do not ingest. Do not breathe fumes or vapour. In case of insufficient ventilation, wear suitable respiratory equipment. If ingested, seek medical advice immediately. Avoid contact with skin and eyes. In case of contact with skin or eyes, wash with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes.
  • Goggles and rubber gloves should be worn whilst handling the acid. Avoid handling the acid in an unventilated area.
